The Trial

Lord Chief Justice Aitchison presided over the trial of John McGuigan for the Cuddies Strip crimes in Perth 1935

The case came to trial in Edinburgh in November 1935, three months after the crimes were committed. The judge was Lord Chief Justice Aitchison, a very famous figure in criminal law, and the first Labour Attorney General in Ramsey MacDonald's government.

McGuigan was charged with murder, rape and burglary. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial generated a huge amount of interest, with people queuing for hours to get into the viewing gallery.
